Access Consultation at The Drum Arts Centre

On 14th March 2012, AFA staff from Disability Resource Centre facilitated a public consultation at The Drum Arts Centre in Aston, which is about to undergo extensive refurbishment.

The consultation event was attended by disabled people from Birmingham and Solihull who listened to the architect, Larry Priest of Bryant Priest Newman Architects, talking about the proposed plans. The group were then taken on a tour of the existing building where they provided useful feedback to Larry and Mark on things like lifts, signage, toilets, car parking, front entrance and auditoreums.

DRC were invited to facilitate the consultation event by CEO of The Drum, Charles Small and Project manager, Mark Holden of Invigour Ltd. A report was produced which will be used to inform the proposed transformation of this unique centre for black arts. The event was also attended by local artists Saranjit Birdi, who gave a talk about his work exploring how the body can be used in different ways to produce artworks and also about his involvement with The Drum.

DRC's Information and Community Empowerment Manager, Pete Millington, who organised the event said:

"We were really pleased with this event and would like to thank the disabled people who attended. Everyone that came was offered vouchers to use when purchasing tickets for live events at The Drum such as theatre and music. What is important is to provide a range of views, advice and opinion from the perspective of different disabled people. For instance, the project manager Mark Holden commented to me that it made a big difference actually being able to observe a wheelchair user going in and out of a lift or toilet. Things can often appear to accessible on paper, but seeing the barriers with one's own eyes has a big impact".

Our congratulations to The Drum for their commitment to full inclusion and accessibility.
